Question:

I have a BDO peso passbook savings account with 10k maintaining balance. Last April 2, the balance became 7k. This April 8, I'll deposit around 3,500. Will my account be charged 300 pesos for those days the account balance was below 10k? Thanks po for the help.

Answer:

If you have maintained your account in the month of March, you will not be charged this April even if you fell below the 10k maintaining-balance requirement the month of April.  Why so?  Because you are charged only if you fall below the maintaining balance requirement for two consecutive months.

This means if you fall below the 10k balance requirement for both March and April (these are 2 consecutive months), then you will be charged the 300-peso penalty this April 29 (last business day of the month).  But if you fall below the required balance for only one month, you won't be charged.

You said you will deposit 3,500 on April 8. Will you be able to maintain your account this month of April?  Let us see. Let's compute your Average Daily Balance (ADB for the month of April).

First, let us add all your daily balances from April 1 to 30.

This is how your account will appear for the month of April if you will not withdraw after depositing 3,500:

April 1: Balance is 10k
April 2 to 7; Balance is 7k
April 8 to 30: Balance is 10,500

Let us add your daily balances for the whole month of April:
April 1: 10,000 x 1 day = 10,000 pesos
April 2 to 7: 7,000 x 6 days = 60,000 pesos
April 8 to 30:  10,500 x 23 days =  241,500 pesos

Total daily balances for the month = 10,000 + 60,000 + 214,500 = 311,500

Your Average Daily Balance (ADB) for the month of April:  311,500 divided by 30 days =  10,383 pesos

This means your ADB for the month of April is 10,383 pesos.
10,383 is higher than 10,000,
so you did not fall below the maintaining-balance requirement in the month of April.

You were able to maintain your account in the month of April.

I make saving bank account before it was October 2019 and unfortunately I need money in December so I tried to get all the money in my bank account also the maintaining balance I wanna ask if I can still use my card now or it was already close since it doesn't have any money inside my card
Nora said…
Hi, if it's a savings account, and it became zero or it had few pesos in December, then your account was most likely closed in January (the 2nd straight month that you did not maintain your account). If it's a cash card, baka active pa, kasi puedeng zero ang laman ng cash card for several months.

My brother wanted to send money to my account through online transfer but it was ist21 transaction unsuccessful. I've checked my balance in BDO apps and it was zero balanace I've search info that ist21 means account is closed. I remembered I withdraw my savings and left 300 plus. What to do? How to activate my account again? Hoping for favorable responses. Thank you
Nora said…
Sorry, BDO does not reactivate closed accounts. But you can open a new account. Most likely your account was closed on the last banking day of the 2nd consecutive month that you did not maintain 2k or more in your account.
If you need something for money transfers, you can use Paymaya or Gcash.

Sir,let me know if my money save in my savings not deduct even i ddnt deposit every month??The maintaining bal.is complete my problem only i ddnt deposit every month and if i deposit sometimes only 2k-4k so its ok or they will deduct my money earn in my savings..thank you
Nora said…
It's okay if you don't deposit every month. It's okay if you deposit only sometimes. There will be no deduction as long as you maintain your account, meaning there's 2k pesos or more in your account every day of the month, or the average daily balance every month is 2k pesos or more.

Hi, i would like to ask if what will happen if withdraw all of my savings using atm including the maintaining balance which is 10k. Will i be charged? Will it automatically close my account?
Nora said…
If you withdraw all your money, and the balance will be zero, yes, your account will automatically close. But if there will be cents or few pesos left in your account, for example 35.00 or 00.26, your account will still be active. If you do not put back 10k on Jan 1 and do not maintain it for the whole month of Jan 2021, your account will automatically close on Jan 29.
If you're not yet able to maintain 10k, open an account with 500 to 1k maintaining balance, or open a digital account (no maintaining balance) like ING Bank or Komo or CIMB via GCash. Download on your phone then open an account. Prepare your ID and TIN. Digital banks in the Philippines

hi, i just want to ask if im going to withdraw my maintaining balance of 2k and left below hunred peso. what will be the consequences if i didnt make a formal closure for my bank acc? is it ok to just leave it ?
Nora said…
Hi, yes, it's okay to just leave your account with less than 100 pesos, and then let it automatically close on the last business day of the 2nd month it was not maintained. There's no liability on your part. There's no rule that you should close your account over the counter. I've checked several banking Terms and Conditions and I couldn't find any about the need to close your account over the counter.
There's a fee for closing your account in less than 1 month from opening date, but this is another thing.

Hello may I ask what will happen if I didn't maintain the 2k balance for 2 consecutive months, I have 100 pesos left on my savings account and after 2 mos it was deducted and I can't transact.

Meaning my account is automatically closed by the bank?? Even I didn't pay the whole 300 pesos charges??
Nora said…
Yes, your account was automatically closed once your balance became negative. On the last business day of the 2nd consecutive month that you didn't maintain your account, 300 pesos was automatically deducted from your account (100 minus 300 = negative 200). When it turned negative, your account automatically closed. If this is BDO, BDO does not reactivate a closed account, even if you'll pay the 200-peso portion of the penalty. You can open a new BDO account after some months. If you like, you can open a digital account like Komo, GSave of CIMB and GCash or ING.

You can download any of the mobile banking apps to open your account. If you have GCash, you can open GSave via GCash.

I have a savings account and I only have the maintaning balance, what will happen if I withdraw 500 on the acct?
Novem said…
Hi, your account will still be active. You must return your 500 on Jan 31 and maintain your maintaining-balance amount every day from Feb 1 to Feb 28 so that your account will not be below the maintaining-balance requirement for 2 CONSECUTIVE months.

Why did BDO close my account this January when it only reached zero balance last December 2020?
Also, last November and December there were remittances from abroad which exceeded my average daily maintaining balance.
Nora said…
Is your account a regular account? If yes, sorry, that is their policy, and the policy of many banks. Once the account balance turns zero or negative, the account automatically closes. If your account is a Kabayan account, it should not have been closed, since you said there were foreign remittances over the past 2 months. You can send a private message to BDO on their FB Messenger: BDO Unibank

my husband has a dollar account and he didnt notice last withdraw he left 6 dollars the maintaining balance is 10 dollars but after 3days he deposit 100 dollars but the teller said there was a 14days clearing.can he still receive deposit from other account even if its still the 100 dollars is in clearing days? Thankyou
Nora said…
Hi, did you mean your husband deposited a 100 dollar cheque? Yes, your husband's dollar account can still receive deposits from other accounts even if the available balance is only $6. It's because his account is active. Just make sure his account has at least $10 every day from Feb 1 to 28 so that his account for the month of February is maintained, and there would be no penalty. Penalty is charged when it's not maintained for 2 consecutive months.
Is this a pension account? I asked because the maintaining balance is only $10.

My account has 7k plus and it's below 10k maintaining balance. Will I still be able to withdraw money of any amount?
Nora said…
Hi Jon, yes, you can withdraw any amount. If February is the first month your account is not maintained, you won't be charged yet, but if your account was below 10k also in January, then 300 pesos will be deducted on Feb 26 (last business day of the month). Another 300 deduction on March 31 if not also maintained in March.
If you've just started working, and this account is not connected to something important, I suggest you withdraw all your balance, and open another account with lower or no maintaining balance requirement. Or you can go to BDO and ask if you can convert your passbook account into an ATM account (2k maintaining).
You can also consider opening a digital account like Komo by Eastwest or GSave of CIMB via GCash. These have no maintaining balance requirement. Just download the app, then register. You upload a photo/scan of your ID and your selfie.

Nora said…
Hi llccxx, yes, kung 2 consecutive months na hindi maintained, merong deduction na 300 pesos at the last business day ng 2nd month. Then kung sa 3rd month, hindi pa rin maintained, meron uli deduction na 300 pesos at the last business day of 3rd month. Another 300 deduction sa 4th month. BDO does not reactivate a closed account.

Nora said…
Hi, huwag mong kunin lahat. Mag-iwan ka ng cents kung meron. Or 100 pesos. Basta dapat hindi 0.00 or negative ang balance. Then next month, dapat i-maintain mo from March 1 to March 31 para hindi mag-penalty on March 31.

Nora said…
Hi, kung malapit ka sa BDO atm, try to check your balance tomorrow, Saturday or the next day, Sunday. Kasi Feb 26 ang last business day ng Feb, the day when banks deduct below-balance penalty for Feb.
Another thing is if you like to maintain it as your own personal account, I think it's better that you go to your branch and ask it to be converted from a payroll account to your personal account, so the payroll tag will be removed. I'm not sure if it's still their policy today, but I had a BDO payroll account before, and it did not accept a check deposit because it was still tagged as a payroll account.

Nora said…
Hi, hindi pa magko-close. Kung hindi mo naibalik yong 1k last March 1 at kung makadeposit ka in the middle of this March pero 1k lang, magkakaroon ka ng deduction na 300 pesos sa March 31, so meron pang balance na 700 pesos. Kung di mo uli ma-maintain ang account mo in April, meron uli 300 pesos deduction on April 30.
Just download the mobile apps, then register. You need your government ID.

Hello, kakapalit ko lang ng bank account last Feb from payroll to savings. Is it fine if i-withdraw ko lahat, including maintaing balance at mag-iiwan na lang ako ng P100? Mag-coclose po ba agad or need ibalik before end of the month at imaintain next month ang P2K?
Nora said…
Hi Lodi, from what you said, I'm thinking na nagdeposit ka ng more than 2k that day in Feb when you had your account converted. So hindi pa magko-close this March 31, kasi magiging 1st month mo pa lang ang March na hindi mo ma-maintain. Two consecutive months not maintained ang merong penalty, and every month thereafter habang it's not maintained.
Dapat mabuo mo ang 2k or more starting April 1 sa account mo, and everyday merong 2k or more sa account until April 30, para walang 300 na deduction sa April 30.

what if i have 8k last feb 20 in my checking account and encash all of it on march 19.will it close automatically even if i deposited again on the same day?
Nora said…
Hi tyrion, I suggest you leave a few pesos or centavos in the account, so it won't close automatically. The closing is not done by a person, it's automatic, it's programmed that once an account balance turns zero or negative, it will close automatically.
So if your balance is 8,045.00, for example, and you withdraw 8k, it won't close yet, as the balance will be 45.00. But if your balance is exactly 8k, withdraw only 7,900, so there'll be 100 pesos in the account.

I withdraw my maintaining balance po mag ko close naba ang account ako pero May natira pang 47pesos still active pa po ba
Nora said…
Kung mahirap mag-maintain, mag-open ka ng digital account, like yong GSave ng CIMB (puede through GCash), o Komo by Eastwest, or yong newest, Tonik. No maintaining balance required, higher interest rates and insured by PDIC.
